Tack Trunk for Horse Riding Gear

Tack Trunk for Horse Riding Gear

In the late spring/early summer of 2021, I designed and built a tack trunk for my youngest daughter, Megan. A tack trunk is used to hold the gear related to riding horses. The base of the design is from a magazine article about building a blanket chest. I modified that design based on looking at numerous tack trunks online and in-person at the barn where my daughter rides. I also incorporated input from Megan.

The main box is constructed from 3/4″ baltic birch plywood with cherry trim. The removable saddle bar is also made from 3/4″ baltic birch. The small removable tote is made with 1/2″ baltic birch and cherry trim. I finished all the parts with several coats of shellac followed by a couple of coats of paste wax.

Testimonial

"I ride horses and my dad built a tack box for me. A tack box holds all my horse riding supplies. He did research on what they usually look like and then asked me for specific requests. It is beautiful, customized, and fits all my things perfectly." - Megan Spiller
